Day 1 Jakar - Ngang Lhakhang (5 hours walk)
You begin in the village of Jakar, the home base for a stay in the Bumthang Valley, and walk along a path behind the Kurjey Lhakhang Temple. The path follows the Chamkar River, a mountain stream full of trout that winds through pine forests. At several points you cross the river via hanging bridges. Along the way you pass the Thangbi Lhakhang Temple, where you can stop and take a look. You will then enter the Ngang Yul region, known as “Land of the Swan.” Here you can visit the Ngang Lhakhang, the Swan Temple. At the end of the day you arrive at the farm where you will spend the night. You will meet the family and get a glimpse into Bhutanese farm life.
Day 2 Ngang Lhakhang - Tahung (7 hours walk)
In the morning your alarm clock will be the noises of a working farm. After breakfast you will begin the ascent towards the Phephe La Pass (3353 m), the highest point of the trek. This is a tough walk through a forest of bamboo and rhododendrons. After the descent from La Phephe you arrive in the village of Tahung (2650 m), where you spend the night with a peasant family. This is the toughest day of the trek.
Day 3 Tahung - Jakar (3 hours hiking)
A short walk brings you back to the Tang Valley (the central part of Bumthang). Here you can walk to the Ugyencholing Palace, which now houses a museum. This is the former residence of the governor and dates from the 16th century. The museum has an interesting collection of religious and secular artifacts and is one of the best museums of Bhutan. Then you walk an hour to Mesithang. From here you can travel by car to Jakar and spend the night in the Bumthang Valley. You can also drive to Trongsa, or in the other direction, to Mongar in eastern Bhutan.
